As most of you are well aware, no RPG guild goes unmarred when it comes to a new expansion. After all, expansions are the best time for players to switch characters, join other guilds, tell their GM they are an oppressive fucktard, or maybe even just quit the game altogether. While most people want their guild to survive, many guilds take great measures to drive people away in droves. The following are things your guild should do to ensure it DOESN’T survive: Continue reading this entry »

Video Spotlight: Avatar Days
Avatar Days is an amazing little movie that contrasts World of Warcraft players with their in-game characters. While machinima has definitely grown by leaps and bounds over the years, Avatar Days exhibits some exceptional CGI and cinematography. Enjoy!
The 5 Traits of a Perfect Recruit
Let’s be honest, recruitment for any game is a complete pain in the ass. To make things worse, the people in charge of recruitment generally aren’t the best at identifying the characteristics that make a good recruit. As a result, your initially small group of like-minded players gets flooded with conflicting personalities and skill levels, creating drama, discontent, and turnover. Fortunately, there are 5 key traits you can look for within your applicants to see whether they will be an asset or just another waste of your time. Continue reading this entry »
Taking a Trip Down Memory Lane – City of Heroes
Okay, so I’ve been on this kick lately of activating old gaming accounts. My most recent adventure back in time: City of Heroes. I know… I KNOW. But I was curious and there is a new expansion coming out in a few months: “Going Rogue,” which is supposed to combine the hero/villain factions and add some much-needed content to the game. So I was like… why not? I’ve blown $15 on stupider things. And you better believe there are some steamy screenshots of pixelated goodness within.
The Ups and Downs of Love with a Gamer: Years 1 and 2
I feel the need to preface this story with the reminder that I did, indeed, end up marrying this guy and plan on being with him until we are both saggy and wrinkly. Also, if you missed the first part of the series, you can read it here.
By some the first two years of a relationship are considered to be the initial “honeymoon” period when someone walks around with as much of their partner’s saliva in their mouth as their own (gross but very true) and little relationship problems get brushed away in the heat of the moment. For the most part this was true of my relationship with the added bonus that I was dating a pale basement dweller with a penchant for Doritos and Bawls. Continue reading this entry »
The Ups and Downs of Love With a Gamer
Living, much less being in a romantic relationship with a gamer can oftentimes only be described with one word: infuriating.
Sometimes I look at my husband and wish that I could turn into one of the characters in his game and throw a fireball at him. We’ve been together for 6 years today (it’s 12:23 AM – after midnight it’s official in girl time) and instead of cuddling me and reflecting upon our time together he is slamming buttons on his keyboard in the, more oftentimes than not failed, attempt to down a boss. But, it’s okay; really, I’m not just saying that to sound like a good wife. I’ve only reached this point of acceptance after going through countless hours of fights over his time spent gaming. You Can Pay to Play Me Anytime!
Sup bitches! So WoW is starting to play the “Pay to Play” game. You know, that business model where you have to pay for special items and gear to make you better–or at least better looking–in a game. Again, you do not necessarily have to purchase any of these items but they are inciting enough to make you spend that hard earned cash of yours.
In World of Warcraft, everyone pays their subscription fee. In most cases, we spend $15/month and we log on to level, obtain gear, play with our friends, PvP, raid end-game content, etc. Now this has gone on for many years already and I have come to learn that if you put in the effort you will get the reward–the achievements, titles, in game pets, mounts, phat epix, or anything else that feels rewarding to you. Star Wars: The Old Republic Combat – Potentially Awesome?
So Bioware/Lucas released a shiny new video for Star Wars: ToR, as most of you know, focusing on the combat system and their plans for the future of the game. All I can say is – fuck yeah. I have such high expectations for the game and I am squirming in my chair in anticipation waiting for it to come out next Spring.
Developers claim that they’re going to take combat to a “new level” and a “make sure players get a full experience in terms of the different kinds of combat.” Check it here if you haven’t already: Continue reading this entry »
