Nefarian certainly proved to be a much greater challenge on the 10 man side of things in comparison to many of the other bosses that fell within a few attempts. As we move into hard modes next week we look forward to seeing how the encounters are tuned.

Necessary vs. Helpful Add-ons within World of Warcraft UI Design

I am by no means a regular follower of the curly-haired voice of the unkempt WoW masses, Lore, but his recent dialogue on what is “necessary” to a WoW player peaked my interest. By trade I am a web and application designer, so my interactions with any interface results in a compulsive analysis — World of Warcraft is no exception.

“White space” is a concept that I’ve always valued when designing websites and applications, but I often ignored this principle when designing my Warcraft UI.

“Wow, there is just so much information I can see and look at. So many indicators that I will use and meters to look at so I can always know what is going on!”

As much as I thought knowing everything about everyone in my raid was necessary, rarely did I frequently utilize that information. Is knowing everyone’s insanity level on Yogg-saron really that vital? Is knowing the amount of mana my casters have truly critical? Do I need nameplates for normal, neutral mobs?

The obvious answer is “no,” but it hasn’t always been that obvious.

If you would, please tell us a little bit about yourself and your role at irnub.

Hi, my name is Adam, and I play the BE Priest Ardoris. I am one of the three primary healers in irnub. I began playing WoW shortly after the introduction of the WoTLK expansion, yes, I am a Wrath Baby…I luv my GS, it makes me feel good at night.

What got you sucked into WoW initially?

My first introduction to WoW was from my college roommate, who has played the game since Warcraft 3, but I was to focused on partying and other such activities in college to join the WoW community. Years later, a co-worker gave the me the WoW Battle Chest shortly after the release of the Wrath expansion and I have never looked back.

So how did you get into progression-oriented raiding?

It seemed like a natural progression. Once passed the initial glamor of the game, exploring the environments, levling a toon, I found that I was lacking a challenge and a desire. If it were not for progression-oriented raiding I would have lost interest in the game and moved on.

What are your greatest strengths and weaknesses as a WoW player?

I rely on my ability to be decisive and react quickly. In progression-oriented raiding the opportunity to second-guess or hesitate is rarely afforded.

As a weakness, I tend to be overly critical of myself. Not to the point where it will effect my in-game performance, but indeed hours after the fact. I may continue to agonize over an error as opposed to simply acknowledging it and moving forward.

Also, female worgens…I like em a little wild.

What are you most and least favorite parts about raiding?

First kills during progression. As a group you could spend near countless attempts and hours on an encounter, and then when it finally comes together, or even if it partially comes together, allowing you to successfully defeat the encounter for the first time, that is my favorite part of raiding. More so the later of those two as well, during the manic moments where the encounter is only a % from completion, several members are dead and the remaining few are using everything available in addition to quietly promising their first-born in hopes of pulling off the kill. I’d say that is the most satisfying part of raiding.

Least favorite part of raiding?

Stagnated content loses it intrigue.

If you could give one “pro tip,” to other players, what would it be?

Ask questions, there is NO shame in asking. The question can range from class mechanics, professions, gemming, chants, to encounters, and spell usage. Each new bit of information can help you develop further as a player.

irnub 8/12 after First Raid Week of Cataclysm

At the release of Cataclysm we quickly leveled to 85 and geared ourselves via the (then challenging) Heroic Dungeons, only to find ourselves face to face with our first raid boss a few days later. As our first full raid week progressed, we downed more than half of the normal mode content with a fair amount of ease and are greatly looking forward to the encounters we have not yet seen, especially the hard modes!

One of the more trying conquests, the Ascendant Council in the Bastion of Twilight, yielded us a US #76 kill and we aim to have much more of those when we approach content that requires real execution and not simply /played.

What’s more, is that we have greatly enjoyed the friendly competition on the server, both alliance and horde, and the drive for progression that so many guilds on Bleeding Hollow have — congratulations to all of them on their successful kills as well!

If you would, please tell us a little bit about yourself and your role at irnub.
My name is Matt and I am a 24 year old Senior Web Designer at one of the large printer companies here in the United States. I currently live in Lexington, KY and am happily married to my wife, Stephanie. I am one of the main tanks and the de facto GM of .

What got you sucked into WoW initially?
I believe Lavishcoot (Jeff), our current Holy Paladin, actually got me into it. Before playing WoW I competed nationally in both Quake 3/4 and Counter Strike 1.6, so MMOs/RPGs weren’t really my flavor of game. One day I was at Jeff’s house and saw him playing the vanilla beta, which peaked my interest, eventually leading to where I am now.

So how did you get into progression-oriented raiding?
I think it was a natural for me to move into the more “competitive” aspect of the game, especially considering my history in gaming. When I first came to the game I found the physical aspects very easy–movement, unit selection, spamming buttons, etc–because I was so used to twitch movements from shooters, but I had to learn the mechanics part of the game which I was not used to at all. As I learned more I got better and found myself constantly desiring to play with better and better players.

What are your greatest strengths and weaknesses as a WoW player?
My ability to play under pressure is probably my most valued strength during progression, though I think my ability to facilitate and moderate are the most important overall. On progression encounters I am as calm on the first kill as I am on the 50th, so I believe that allows me to not get nervous and make unnecessary mistakes.

In the long term, most guilds end up ripping themselves apart – fully knowing this I think it is incredibly important to have someone that is as objective as possible at the head of a group to make sure things persist healthily. I am generally the go-to guy when someone has an issue because they know I will keep an open mind and do my best to handle the situation reasonably. Additionally, guilds can often have trouble making decisions or engaging in healthy discourse, so I try to be a moderator and also offer “devil’s advocate” viewpoints.

One weakness is that I actually enjoy the game too much, leading me to invest a lot personally and emotionally into the guild. My wife often complains that I am having an affair on her with WoW, which in the past has unfortunately been a reasonable complaint.

For better or worse, another weakness may be my temper and/or tolerance for poor performance. I’ve been known for outbursts when I or someone else makes a critical mistake. Moreover, as a tank I see it as unacceptable to make mistakes, despite the fact that they are bound to happen; thus, when I do mess up, everyone hears it.

What are you most and least favorite parts about raiding?
First kills of hard bosses are easily the most gratifying and my favorite. I would say my least favorite are when tempers flare if you’ve been working on an encounter for a long time and then everyone logs out pissed off.

If you could give one “pro tip,” to other players, what would it be?
Never stagnate, always aim to do better than you did last week.

What is unusual is not that fact that I have been discussing the game, but at the frequency and excitement of which I have been discussing it. The plentiful discussions I’ve had with others involving Cataclysm made me notice how much I didn’t talk about other games before they were released, and why.

BlizzCon 2010 in Pictures (and Video!)
