The new space combat trailer for Star Wars: The Old Republic, displays some amazing footage with high quality voice acting in traditional BioWare fashion. What do you think?

I’ll be honest, that is pretty awesome.
This bring world PVP to a whole new level!
Erection.
I disagree with all of you.
That looks like single-player Starfox.
Not an MMO.
I’m with Blacksen. This looks terrible. From what I’ve read, there will be no PvP in these space events. They are single player Star-Fox esque travel sequences (except other than the pretty backgrounds, the actual level design looks rather uninspired). This looks about as lame as those gummi ship sequences in Kingdom Hearts. Give me Tie-Fighter vs X-Wing free space dog fighting or bust. I lose hope for this game more every time they show more. I hope they have an ace in the hole that will suddenly make this game what it should be.
Sure, the next thing you all will say is single player Star Fox wasn’t awesome. Right!
Star Fox was great…17 years ago. This is an MMO. If they’re gonna give us space combat, give us the whole enchilada instead of half-assing it.
Hopefully they fix this up before release and at least include Slippy the Toad yelling at you to cover him.
I’ll play devil’s advocate here for a second.
There are a lot of things in WoW and other MMOs that you do that don’t directly involve a ton, or any, people.
What’s wrong with the above movie being a daily you do? Instead of flying around doing a ‘bombing run’ or collection 15 chicken eggs or whatever else, you go into a space zone and blow the fuck out of some NPCs. Isn’t that a lot more fun than doing the same old thing?
I can understand the frustration with it being half assed and not viable for PVP or free flight or anything else, but putting “mini games” in the grand scheme of an MMO is a good way to break up the monotony.
Keep in mind, throwing a ton of money at a game isn’t going to draw people away from WoW and other established MMOs, so BioWare may be trying to innovate a little bit in this respect. Perhaps in a future expansion they would open this up to PVP and other things that are worthy of “amagah awesome”’s.
For me it has more to do with a precedent of what space combat should be in a star wars mmo, both based on fundamentals of what make an mmo (pvp) as well as the history of the company making the game. While the game is bioware, it does fall under the lucasarts umbrella which has a rich history with its dogfighting games. The reason I’m disappointed is because I assumed the game was going this. It was as obvious to me as having warp pipes in a mario game. Sure, when you put it into context of something like a daily, it looks much more fun than say a typical wow bombing run, but the whole reason we would consider a different mmo is for something different, not a prettier version of what we’re already doing, and mmo space dogfights would have been the hot ticket.
Man, I hated slippy, I hated trying to help him since 10 seconds into the opening level. Only thing useful he did was make the submarine for that water level.
I’m more complaining because of other elements of the game as well. This is just another element of a Guild Wars-esque MMO.
I’m not saying it won’t be a great game. It’s just not the game I wanted it to be.
This was an opportunity for them to be innovative. There is no innovation present in that video.
I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I agree with Blacksen. I came from Star Wars: Galaxies. And I loved playing SWG. That’s right, I loved it. Until the New Game Enhancements, I wouldn’t have stopped playing if it had stayed the way it was. And the reason behind all that, besides all the micromanaging for crafting which was awesome, was the Jump To Lightspeed Expansion. I had command of my ship, whether it be the small fighter, hulking mining ship, or my YT-1300. I loved how it was just like Tie Fighter for combat, there was an immediate feeling of I know exactly how to fly this ship, what its capabilities are, and how much ass I can kick.
Seeing a third person perspective for space combat has effectively made me go limp. If they fuck this up, the entire game is fucked up. It will be just like Star Trek Online, and how they screwed up space combat from the get go. Maybe this was just showing it from the third person perspective and you can still play it from first person and it will be as you remember flying, but right now I’m thoroughly disappointed, and this is coming from a diehard BioWare supporter. I have to remember my roots though, and Star Wars are my roots. Do it right or leave it out.
