Okay, so I’ve been on this kick lately of activating old gaming accounts. My most recent adventure back in time: City of Heroes. I know… I KNOW. But I was curious and there is a new expansion coming out in a few months: “Going Rogue,” which is supposed to combine the hero/villain factions and add some much-needed content to the game. So I was like… why not? I’ve blown $15 on stupider things. And you better believe there are some steamy screenshots of pixelated goodness within.
Let me start by saying don’t knock it until you try it! City of Heroes is a totally casual-friendly game, mostly geared towards RPers (or so I’ve noticed on the Virtue server). It’s also completely customizable, and with the latest addition of “Architects” you can actually build your own missions/characters and hero/villain storyline. They’ve done a lot since I last played, which was like a million years ago (aka 4). The graphics have been upgraded (players can chose “ultra” settings now), broker houses have been implemented, there’s a crafting system and a lot of other stuff I can’t remember off the top of my head. I came back to my level 43 Defender with 54 free tailor sessions (how you change your costume) – OMG SHOES. Needless to say I went a little nuts.
The cons: the game is repetitive and can get rather boring fast. There’s not much in the way of “end game” content other than the occasional PvP, and a lot of the mission maps mirror each other. There’s not much depth, but simple can be good sometimes too. If you’re bored with your current game and are interested in a change of pace, I would definitely check out the 14-day free trial. The costume building is great – there’s so many options your head will explode. I reactivated like a week ago and I’m still messing with my toon’s outfits (admittedly dropped $10 at the NCSoft store on one of the costume packs, awful).
As promised, here are some shots of graphical changes and, well, my awesome costumes:

Haha. City of heroes. That brings back some memories. The first time I heard about it was in a GameInformer monthly article. The article gave a commentary of 2 of the editors( I can’t remember which ) as they played 3 rounds of Freedom Force vs The Third Reich. At the end they mentioned CoH. I played a trial of it, but I didn’t really get into it, that much.
However, CoH will always be a game that I’ll keep in the back of my mind, as something to distract kids(when/if I have any) because, I mean c’mon, who DOESN’T wanna be a superhero? Or even a villain(if you have some sick demented child)
After Asheron’s Call 2 I jumped into World of Warcraft and never really played CoH until a friend of mine gave me a free trial. After playing for a few hours, the game seemed like it had a fair amount of content, but the world seemed so cheesy to me having come from seemingly more “immersive” games.
It appeared as if the developers had simply placed a bunch of uniform models all over the streets and hoped it would look good. It is probably a small detail to some, but a semi-realistic game world (in whatever context) is more or less required for me to enjoy a game I playing in.
OMG CoH was my first MMO.
I played on Virtue… my main was a illusion/emp controller.
I used to rock that sh!t in pvp and pve.
Memories for sure on like 6 hr task forces… lol
I also remember you could exploit a map and power level crazy toons.
But i did love the costume aspect of it.
I had my rave party outfit, my seriuz super hero outfit, my suit outfit, and my sexy skin outfit… lol
but i did get tired of it b/c no end game content… you did get to raid Hamidon a boss but it was laggy and got boring.
and you truly see the difference b/t CoH and WoW. but like you say CoH is very casual and just fits the comic book/super hero-villain side of us.
CoH was very fun back in the day. Though yes it was repetitive as hell and got boring fucking QUICK.
When they released Villains I got more into it, as I found it much funner (lolrp) to play a villain and the newspaper system of missions was a glorious addition. Level capped mission givers was annoying as fuck.
All in all a fun if short-lived experience.
