While perusing my usual circuit of MMO oriented sites, I came across a thread called, “Paying For Tanks — A New Fad?” Here, players discuss their excitement or disgust of how tanks within World of Warcraft are beginning to charge players for their services. There are two arguments within this thread:
- Paying a tank allows for a group to be formed quickly and usually go smoothly, saving everyone time. It is fine to pay a tank.
- Paying a tank is a slippery slope, because soon all classes in need for a certain role or encounter will begin charging rather than just playing the game like everyone else. People should not pay for a tank.
Not surprisingly, this same issue in one form or another has appeared in almost every MMO I have played where some entrepreneurial players try and take advantage of a class imbalance.
Some love it, some hate it.
Do you think paying a tank (or any in-demand class) is OK? Have you ever charged for your services as a player? Is charging people to use you a new market within MMOs or are people just being selfish jerks?

I have seen this done in game and I have even done this myself. You even get ridicule in trade chat for trying to do so. But you do get some to bite the bait and you reel them in. But its too much of a hassle and the gold you get is not even worth the time and I don’t see this being game breaking. The gold you make is minimal and you still have to worry about carrying dps or healers to make the run to even go fast. The gold vs the effort does not make it worth it IMO. And in most cases you have tanks in your guild or have friends that are tanks. Just run with them.
Or do what I do as DPS: I do my dailys, quests, farming until I get the que to pop for a dungeon.
If its time that is the issue. Get a tank friend or guildy to group with. Grouping with a healer even sometimes gets you faster ques also.
To me this is a none issue because as rare as tanks may seem because there are so many more dps, you will find a group (eventually) or the group will find you.
Being a tank I am somewhat biased towards this topic as I know, at least in World of Warcraft, how few people play tanks, and even fewer are well geared and good at their role. I would be lying if I said I had never charged to tank either.
I originally started charging to tank when I was tired of being asked to tank old(er) content as it wasn’t worth my time anymore to do such. After being asked once again I said I would do it for a fee–the person agreed and we completed the dungeon.
I gave being a, “tank for hire” a test run and started charging for everything I did and found that people were more than happy to pay for my services knowing that they were “hiring” a reliable tank that would make the run go smoother, rather than taking their chances on a lesser tank and spend time wiping and failing.
Personally, if I was able to “hire” skilled healers, as a tank I would gladly do such for certain instances. Also, if a group is lacking in the DPS department, I thinking “hiring” or at least bribing a high end DPS to come in is viable.
Paying players for their services is controversial because that generally isn’t what the games are about, but with MMOs being so socially oriented I have a hard time imagining that this isn’t a viable market for money making by some.
The worst case scenario I’ve seen from this, is mid-instance. It wasn’t me personally, but what happened to this guy was he joined a CoT: Strat for his random heroic. After they finally made their way to the beginning of the ridicuously long RP event, the tank in the group used a block of text macro basically saying that if they didn’t give him some sort of payment, he would go and fish from the river. Naturally, you can’t trade gold cross servers, and their kick CD was up(iirc) so they were kinda shit outta luck. I believe what they did was continue on, using a plate DPS they had in the group to tank, and the actual tank sat near the river in the instance, and fished.
I’m perfectly fine with hiring a tank, because it means that A.) He’s reliable, and B.) The instance will finish quickly. I won’t pay any outrageous prices, and I won’t consider it if the tank is poorly geared/skilled, etc.
One thing I can’t stand is when the tank or healer says “oh DPS are a dime-a-dozen, who cares, we’ll just replace you within 30 seconds.” Yes, DPS are in high supply, but a smart DPS is a bit more rarer, and we’re just as important in a group as the tank or healer. You’re just as likely to get an idiot DPS, wearing tanking gear, or spellpower gear, or gemming for spirit, etc, as you are in getting a correctly geared/gemmed DPS.
Waiting in queue can take upwards of 15 minutes as dps. Adding a tank is almost an instant heroic. Paying a small amount of gold for the lack of queue alone is worth it in my opinion.
I’m a big fan of playing with people you like. I’ve been in the same situation as you Sev and luckily at the time had a healer in the group who was pro as hell. So I just righteous fury it up and let the rejuv’s tick me (us) through to victory. It seems like 75% of the time you wind up in a random group that is poorly geared and the other 25% of the time you get a douche who thinks his crap doesn’t stink. The main thing to remember is that the people who think that they are too good to run with the peons of the world of warcraft are also real people as well, I feel more sorry for them than anything because they need real life help if the only way they feel good is to bring down others.
As for paying for a tank, I never have, not that I haven’t thought about it when gearing up my alts, but I would rather an instance not succeed and requeue than pay someone for their services. Again, the game has a built in mechanic to prevent this sort of thing, and it is called getting into a guild that works together for a common goal. If you need a leveling guild get into that, if you want a guild that puts raiding at its heading get into a raiding guild, and if you RP well there are guilds for that. The main thing to remember is that if you want to go further in this game you need to establish relationships. Or pick up multiboxing and learning to tank, heal, and dps instances solo.

I’ve never payed for tank services and back when I played a tank (very very long time ago) I never charged either. Granted I don’t charge for anything, even old enchants that very few people have, and I generally tell people to take money of the window when they try to tip me.
I’m probably a rare exception to the rule, but being as this is a social game played by mostly capitalists, this will happen more and more. I’d say get used to it.
Of course, I don’t need randoms anymore so my opinion probably doesn’t count for much.
I usually act as Krieg’s “pocket-healer” and I somewhat enjoy meeting new people on the server this way. It also gives better players the chance to “pay-it-forward” and help the newbs on their rotation/techniques!
Sure working as a pocket healer is fine Orestia, but you barely or rarely ever meet people from the server doing randoms. Its cross-server queues, so you quite possibly never group with these people ever again.
I have paid tanks for instant queues while leveling my alt. I offer a fair amount and only pay once the run is finished. Shelling out some pocket change is worth skipping the line for me.
Seth, the way Krieg and I do this is that we get all dps from our server… not cross-server randoms… So, yes, we do group with the same people several times.
